tankmates for bettas fish Cherry Barb Care & Tank Set up Guide

Cherry Barbs are great fish to have in a planted tank. These are peaceful & don't even pick on each other like other schooling fish. Cherry Barbs are native to Sri Lanka an island located below India. Natural habitat includes leafy bottom freshwater's mainly Kelani and Nilwala river basins. They grow 2 inches & can live for 4 year's or more. Male cherry barbs are more reddish in coloration compared to the Female cherry barb fish.
Puntius titteya is the scientific name of these fish. Cherry Barbs are also among the hardiest fish I have kept. They tolerate & adapt well to wide range of water parameters. Since these fish are somewhat shy, they should not be kept with aggressive fish. Below details will help with keeping cherry barb fish in an aquarium.

Tank size - I suggest 15 Us gallon or larger tank. Always keep cherry barbs in a school of 6 or more, 2 females for every male cherry barb keeps the group peaceful.

Tank Decor for cherry barbs - Live Aquatic Plants are needed in a cherry barb tank, make sure the tank is nicely filtered & aerated. I'm using a HOB filter & an air stone in this aquarium. You can also use carpet plants in cherry barb tank.

Water parameter for Cherry Barbs -
I maintain pH level at 7 on this tank.
Temperature range is between 77 to 82°F (25 – 27 °C)
Water hardness - I maintain it less than 60 ppm

Food for cherry barb
I'm Feeding Tetra bits, Mini pellets as these fish are tiny, flakes, Freeze dried worms, I fed Daphnia only once. These fish are Omnivores and not choosy when it comes to food.

Tank mates for cherry barbs -
I have kept them with Neon tetra, Black neon tetra, Betta fish, Guppies, Mollies, Sword tail fish, Platy fish, Rummy nose tetra, Rainbow fish, Harlequin Rasbora, Kuhli loach, L. Guntea loach, Dwarf Gourami etc.

About the video - This is a 15 gallon tank, with Guppies, Betta & Cherry barbs, tank was cycled for over a month & the first inhabitants were guppies as I had algae growth in this tank. I used white river sand & root tabs for plants. Drift wood with Anubias plants & a little java moss tied to the driftwood. I follow 25% weekly or bi- weekly water change.
