Western rainbow fish is a prime option for a big planted aquarium, these fish are peaceful shoaling fish. The video is aimed at providing information about this fish to understand the behavior & requirements in an aquarium.
Firstly, little information about their natural habitat would help setting up a tank for these amazing Western Australian Rainbow fish.These fish are native to North Western region of Australia. Natural habitat includes from ponds, lakes tributaries, small streams to river with under water vegetation, the colors and patterns on these fish may vary depending on the location and water bodies they inhabit. there is a large fluctuation in water conditions between the dry and wet seasons and these fish have adapted well to these conditions; this makes them hardy fish and easy to care for in an aquarium. These fish can grow close to 4 inches and may live past 5 years easily.
Scientific name - Melanotaenia australis
Male western rainbow fish are bigger in size and display brighter colors, Male western rainbow as they age become more deep bodied and develop nuchal hump. Female western rainbow fish are smaller & colors seem like more faded as seen in the video.
Breeding western rainbow fish - I have not red these fish in the aquarium yet, however you can notice spawning behavior in the video, if I do succeed to breed these fish in an aquarium I would make a video on it. These fish are egg scatters and mostly are know to eat their eggs, this kind off makes it difficult to breed them without preparing a separate breeding tank.
Western rainbow aquarium care -
Tank size - In case you have a Rainbow community planted tank 75 gallon would be the right tank size, any aquarium less than 55 gallon would make it difficult to keep these fish, as they are shoaling fish which needs to be kept in a group of 6 or more with at least 2 males, as they compete with each other and get more colorful during spawning.
Tank decoration for western rainbow fish -
You would need to set up a planted tank with driftwood and rocks and a lot of open swimming area. I have used driftwood with java moss tied to it, Dwarf Sagittaria, Hygrophila and Water Lilly plants in the tank. I have used white sand for tank bottom with small rocks covering it, however rainbow fish color up nicely with dark substrate.
Tank mates for western rainbow fish -
I have kept these fish with other rainbows, cardinal tetra's, black neon tetra, swordtail fish, chinese algae eater, yoyo loach and clown loach with no trouble. These fish chase each other sometimes like most schooling fish to pick a pecking order, its never violent enough to hurt each other or other fish.
Food - This is easy as these fish eat everything you feed them, quality pellets, flakes, spirulina, freeze dried worms, live food like daphnia, blood worms etc. Just ensure to balance & mix the food you feed well.

Temperature range - 72-82°F (22-27°C)
pH range - 6.5-8.0
Water hardness: soft to moderately hard i.e. under 180 ppm
