Grow out Tank for African Mbuna Cichlids. The Mbuna Cichlid fry in the Video are just over a month old & 0.5 inch in length. These fry are raised in a Grow out tank.
African Cichlids Mbuna are aggressive species. This Rock Dwelling fish are very territorial. Once the fry are free swimming & leave their parents protection. The fry are threatened by other fish in the Tank. Its best to remove the fry & raise them separately in a 'Grow out' Tank until they are big enough to defend themselves. The fry can be raised for 10 to 15 days in a breeding tank & then should be moved to a grow out tank, which is bigger in size. The fry should be kept in the Grow out Tank until they grow about 1.5 inches in length & this also depends on the type of adult fish in the main tank. For example Electric Yellow Lab or Peacock haps are less Aggressive than Auratus or Kenyi Cichlids. So in case of less aggressive fish the Fry can me introduced much earlier than aggressive fish.
Grow out Tank for Mbuna Care Guide -
Tank size - 20 to 30 gallon depending on the Brood size
Temperature - 78 to 80 degree F (25.5 to 26.6 degree C)
pH - 7.5 to 8.5
Water Hardness - 10 to 15 dGH (hard to very hard)
Filtration - for first 15 days use a sponge filter & then use a HOB or submersible filter with good flow rate.
Water change - 10% daily or 25% weekly
Food- Feed Crushed Flakes, Mini Pellets, Infusoria, Baby brine Shrimp ( Thrice a day)
