Firemouth Cichlid is a semi-aggressive cichlid native to parts of Central America like Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama etc.They inhabit the middle and bottom areas of slow moving rivers, ponds, and canals with sandy or muddy bottoms. They stay close to vegetation near the shore where they feed on algae along with some meaty foods. Male Fire mouth Cichlid may grow up to 6 inches & the Female Firemouth Cichlid may grow around 4 inches in Length. In an aquarium these fish can live up to 10 years with proper care.

Fire mouth Cichlid Aquarium Care -
These fish can tolerate wide range of water conditions. The Male Fire Mouth Cichlid fish can grow about 6 inches in length & the Female Fire Mouth Cichlid can grow up to 4 inches in length. They live well over 10 years in home aquarium. These fish are easy to breed, they start breeding in 8 to 10 months of age & will spawn every 15 to 20 days in right conditions. Breeding Fire Mouth fish is relatively easy, water change raising the temperature to 82.0° F generally works. This fish lay eggs usually under rocks or pots in the aquarium. They dig sand so plants will not work in a Firemouth cichlid aquarium as they would uproot the plants, plants tied to driftwood would work great.
Male Fire mouth cichlids are larger in size & have longer fins. Female Firemouth fish are smaller, The Red coloration under the Gills & Jaw area are more prominent in Males. They also flare the Gills to fend off intruders from their territory.
What size tank is best for Fire Mouth Cichlid?
I have housed my Fire Mouth in 50 gallon community tank with Garra Rufa as you can see in the Video. Breeding pair must be housed in 30 gallon & fully grown in 75 Gallon aquarium
Tank Decoration for Firemouth cichlids -
I used driftwood, sand for tank bottom, 3 pots to provide cover for less dominant fish. Rocks can be used as well. Plants like Java fern & Anubias can be used in the tank by tying them to Driftwood.
What to feed Fire mouth fish?
Firemouth fish are not picky eaters, I feed them quality flakes, Pellets, Freeze dried worms, Live & frozen food, spirulina. These fish are Omnivores in their natural habitat & feed on meaty food, algae & plant matter.
Water parameters for Fire Mouth fish -
pH range - 6.5 to 8, I maintain my tank around 7 pH
Temperature range - 73.0 to 82.0° F (23 to 27° C)
Water hardness - soft to hard water. They can withstand hard water over 180 ppm.
Tank mates for Fire Mouth Cichlids -
I have kept my Fire Mouth Cichlids fish with juvenile Red devil fish, Green terror cichlid, African Jewel fish, Convict Cichlid & Pleco fish etc. You can include Fire Mouth Cichlids with African Cichlids as they can tolerate hard water, but ensure you choose compatible tank mates. They will go after smaller fish & while breeding they get territorial & aggressive & will take on bigger fish.
