Planted aquarium in the video was set-up & there is no CO2, no fertilizers & no filter used. Plants I chose for this approximately 10 gallon aquarium are Dwarf Sagittaria, Vallisneria Nana. I failed few times with the wrong type of plants & lights. This time I got it right with the right tank size, choice of plants, correct lighting & type of fish for a Nano aquarium with No CO2, No Fertilizer, No Filter Aquarium.
How to start a Planted Nano Aquarium Without CO2 and Plant Fertilizers?
I learnt that there are few low light, low maintenance plants & I accidentally discovered them thriving in my larger aquarium without any plant fertilizers & basic gravel. So, I picked up these plants which was Dwarf Sagittaria & Vallisneria Nana. Then I had to decide on the aquarium size, I went with a 10 gallon as 5 gallon aquarium needed at least good amount of planted substrate with minerals for them to sustain & I wanted to keep everything basic in this aquarium, 10 gallon was my choice for this project, so that the aquarium would cycle enough with beneficial bacteria growing in the substrate as I did not want a filter & also wanted the gravel to store enough plant food naturally for plants to grow.
What is the best sand or substrate for a No CO2, No Fertilizer, No Filter Nano Aquarium?
I've watched different layers of sand added in this type of set up, the sand was rich in plant food. In my case I wanted basic sand or substrate, so I chose mixed gravel which was remains from my previous set-up.I added the mixed sand & planted dwarf sagittaria & vallesneri nana.
What Plants can be used for a No CO2, No Fertilizer, No Filter Nano Aquarium?
There are aquatic plants which require not much light & minerals. So this kind of a project requires to select the easy maintenance plants. I discovered Dwarf Sagittaria & Vallesneria Nana need less minerals & are low maintenance plants, as these plants were thriving in my bigger 20 gallon aquarium even after I stopped adding fertilizers in it. There are plants which grow on driftwood like Anubias, Java fern & Java Moss but they do require some kind of fertilizers in small quantities. I wanted a rooted plant which grows easily, so I chose these plants.
What pH of water should be maintained in No CO2, No Fertilizer, No Filter Aquarium?
I added water from my RO which is tuned at pH 7. The water pH also plays an important role in such set ups as hard water makes the plants difficult to survive initial days. Few plants survive hard water. Hard water creates a layer of minerals on the leafs of plants which blocks the light to an extent that the plants cannot perform photosynthesis. So acid water is what is preferred in these kind of aquarium with not filter or fertilizers.
What light should I use for a No CO2 No Filter No Fertilizer Planted Aquarium?
Plants for aquarium require light to prepare their food through the process called photosynthesis. Too much light would lead to algae spike which would kill the plants, too less of light would not help them prepare food for themselves. There are 3 types of aquatic plants the one which require low light, medium light & high light. Once the mixed gravel, plants & water was added. I chose a LED light which was 6 watts, perfect for this tank size & plants. I keep the light on for 5 hours a day.
What fish can I keep in a No CO2 No Filter No Fertilizer Planted Aquarium?
Labyrinths are the obvious option for aquarium with not filter. As these fish have an organ called Labyrinth which allows them to breathe atmospheric air in case of less oxygen in the water for their gills to intake. Other option is guppies as I have see these fish live in small ponds & usually swim at the surface. So I chose Guppy fish for my No CO2 No Filter No Fertilizer Planted Aquarium. The number of Guppies were 7 with 2 males & 5 females. Now you can see in the video I also have Guppy fry & they are thriving. I feed these fish twice a day with micro pellets & other fish food.
Why do you need snails in a No CO2 No Filter No Fertilizer Planted Aquarium?
Trumpet snails hide under the sand during day & come out only during night. These moves the sand or gravel. the circulation helps with ammonia to be buried under the sand which is later consumed by the plant roots. If there are too many snails its bad for the aquarium as the bio-load spike. Hence, removing excess snails from the aquarium regularly is important.
Maintenance of No CO2 No Filter No Fertilizer Planted Aquarium?
Initially I did a water change every 2 to 3 days to avoid algae growth, Now I just change 25% weekly.
