African Cichlid Fry Care is relatively easy . I'm raising mixed African Cichlid Fry in a grow out tank & its fun to watch them grow. The fish you see in the video are 0.5 inches in length & few weeks old. The Aquarium I'm using to raise these fish is just under 10 gallon, as soon as they reach 1 inch in size I would move them to a 20 gallon grow out tank. I have shared information on the best practices in the fish keeping hobby for raising healthy cichlid fry in this video.
Firstly to raise healthy Cichlid fry a Nursery or grow out tank is needed. 10 gallon tank can hold 10 to 15 fry however 20 gallon would be ideal.
Sponge filter is needed in any baby fish aquarium, this avoids the fish getting into the filter & sponge filters to a good job oxygenating & hold bio-load. Next essential equipment in a fry tank is a aquarium heater to maintain ideal temperature for the fish.
For tank decoration of Cichlid fry I always use sand for the tank bottom, this avoids any waste produced floating in the tank. However lot of fish keepers keep the fry tank without any sand, this also works. Rocks can be used to decorate the tank, I used clay pots for this tank as its easier to clean & does a good job providing the fish with hiding places. Next comes plants, floating plants help with maintaining the water quality, I also used Pothos plant which also help a lot in maintaining clean water in the aquarium. For this tank I also added some snails, the snails eat the uneaten food by the fish, this also helps in maintaining good water condition. For aquarium maintenance I change 50% water every 3 days. I feed varied food 3 times a day which includes Flakes, mini pellets, spirulina, algae wafer, baby brine shrimp etc.
Water parameters -
Temperature - 78 to 80 degree F (25.5 to 26.6 degree C)
pH - 7.5 to 8.5
Water Hardness - 10 to 15 dGH (hard to very hard)
